Swedish automaker Volvo has announced plans to take over software development in-house, with vehicle appeal becoming increasingly defined by software-driven functions and functionality rather than traditional automotive attributes.

The next generation of Volvo electric models, including the company’s first SUV on a new all-electric platform, will run on its own operating system (OS), called VolvoCars.OS, which the automaker says will allow faster and more flexible development, media reports said.

VolvoCars.OS will act as an umbrella system for the brand’s electric vehicles and integrate the company’s various operating systems across the car and the cloud, creating a cohesive software operating system environment. The underlying operating systems include Android Automotive OS, QNX, AUTOSAR, and Linux.
